Pu'an has a long history of tea production, dating back to the Yelang period—or even earlier. The ancestors of the indigenous Buyi ethnic group, known as the Pu people, were among the first to settle near tea plants. Legend has it that their female spiritual leader, "Fu Niang," was the one who first discovered tea and began using it to heal her people. From then on, the traditions of cultivating, harvesting, processing, and treasuring tea have been passed down through generations, thriving continuously for thousands of years. As early as the 1950s and 1960s, Pu'an initiated large-scale tea cultivation, and by the 1980s, it had already established a sprawling 10,000-mu tea plantation—once serving as one of Guizhou's earliest export bases for black tea.
